 Hero of the Kashmir Conflict

After India gained independence, Biju Patnaik continued to play a vital role in the nation’s (India) cause for integrity. One of his most celebrated actions was during the Indo-Pakistani conflict of 1947. On October 27, 1947, when tribal militias(referred to as Kabailis) backed by Pakistani forces infiltrated Kashmir, Patnaik made multiple flights from Delhi to Srinagar, transporting Indian soldiers to defending  the region and ensuring Kashmir may remained the integral part of India.

Rescue of Indonesian Prime Minister

One of Biju Patnaik’s most audacious missions was to rescue the Indonesian Prime Minister, Sutan Sjahrir, during Indonesia’s struggle for independence from Dutch colonial rule. On July 22, 1947, defying Dutch control, Patnaik and his wife flew a Dakota aircraft into Indonesia and safely brought Sjahrir to India via Singapore. This act of bravery earned him Indonesia's highest honors, including the 'Bhumi Putra' title, and the Indonesian government bestows Biju Patnaik with the country's highest honor, the prestigious 'Bintang Jasa Utama' award.

Political Career

Biju Patnaik served as the Chief Minister of Odisha for two terms (1961-1963 and 1990-1995).
