Kathputli Puppetry: The Traditional Folk Art Form of Rajasthan

The kathputli of Rajasthan

Puppets from different parts of India each have their own distinct identity. Rajasthani string puppets are known as Kathputli. Kathputli is a traditional folk art form that involves puppet performances based on popular legends and is carried out by skilled puppeteers. The popularity of this puppet tradition in Rajasthan is so strong that the name Kathputli evokes images of Rajasthan and its rich folklore. The term Kathputli is derived from two Rajasthani words: 'kath,' meaning wood, and 'putli,' meaning a doll. Thus, Kathputli refers to a wooden doll.

brief history of kathputli:

Kathputli, or Rajasthani puppetry, is believed to have originated thousands of years ago. Initially practiced by the Bhati community, this art form was later adopted by ruling families in the region, contributing to its widespread popularity. Kathputli is one of the most vibrant aspects of Rajasthani folk culture and legacy. According to legend, Raja Vikramaditya of Ujjain was deeply fond of puppets, and his throne was intricately carved with thirty-two beautiful dolls. The first performance featured thirty-two puppets depicting the life and achievements of Vikramaditya. The successors of the original puppeteer continued to perform for later royal families, gaining considerable recognition and acclaim.

elements of kathputli

Kathputli puppets of Rajasthan are carved from a single piece of wood. They are bright in color and beautifully dressed. Large eyes with arched eyebrows and thin lips on an oval face are distinctive features that define their identity. The costumes and headgear are designed in the medieval Rajasthani style, which is still prevalent today. Kathputli puppets typically stand about two feet tall.

performance of kathputli:

Kathputli performances are among the most popular performing arts in Rajasthan. These shows are typically held during fairs and festive occasions. A small stage is set up for the performance, where puppeteers use their skills to narrate stories drawn from Rajasthani ballads, local folk tales, and folk songs. Sometimes, the puppeteers enhance the ballads with various sounds to create a highly dramatized version of regional music, adding greater impact to the show.

The themes of the puppet shows often revolve around stories of legendary figures such as Prithviraj Chauhan, Vikramaditya, Amar Singh Rathore, and other famous legends. Puppeteers manipulate the puppets with two to five fingers, displaying great dexterity without the need for additional props or supports. The puppeteer is usually accompanied by an assistant who plays the dholak (drum) and sings narrative songs. Music and narrative songs play a vital role in the performance.
